Glossary

Carbon Neutral - The New Oxford American Dictionary’s Word of the Year for 2006. Being Carbon Neutral involves calculating your total climate-damaging carbon emissions, reducing them where possible, and then balancing your remaining emissions, often by purchasing a Carbon Offset: paying to plant new trees or investing in "green" technologies such as solar and wind power.

Carbon Offsets or Carbon Credits - Carbon offset is the process of reducing the net carbon emissions of an individual or organization, either by their own actions, or through arrangements with a Carbon Offset provider.

A Carbon Offset provider achieves this net reduction through proxies who reduce their emissions and/or increase their absorption of Greenhouse Gases. A wide variety of offset actions are available; tree planting is the most common. Renewable energy and energy conservation offsets are also popular, including emissions trading credits.

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) - Greenhouse Gases are components of the atmosphere that contribute to the Greenhouse effect. Some Greenhouse Gases occur naturally in the atmosphere, while others result from human activities. Naturally occurring Greenhouse Gases include water vapor, Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), nitrous oxide, and ozone. Certain human and animal activities add to the levels of most of these naturally occurring gases.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2)- Carbon Dioxide, CO2, is one of the gases in our atmosphere. Commercially, CO2 finds uses as a refrigerant, in beverage carbonation, and in fire extinguishers. In the United States, 10.89 billion pounds of Carbon Dioxide were produced by the chemical industry in 1995, ranking it 22nd on the list of top chemicals produced. Carbon Dioxide is released into our atmosphere when carbon-containing fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas, and coal are burned in air. As a result of the tremendous world-wide consumption of such fossil fuels, the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has increased over the past century, now rising at a rate of about 1 ppm per year. Major changes in global climate could result from a continued increase in CO2 concentration.

Methane (CH4) - Methane is a relatively potent greenhouse gas with Global Warming potential. When averaged over 100 years each kg of CH4 warms the Earth 23 times as much as the same mass of CO2, however there is approximately 220 times as much CO2 in the Earth's atmosphere as Methane. There are several major sources of Methane: rice paddies, swamps and wetlands , mining and oil drilling, landfills, termites, biomass burning, and animals. Ninety percent of animal Methane is produced by sheep, goats, camels, water buffalo, etc., but most of all cattle, of which the world has an estimated 1.2 billion. Each cow emits 200 to 400 quarts of Methane gas per day, or 50 million metric tons per year. The livestock sector in general (primarily cattle, chickens, and pigs) produces 37% of all human-induced methane.

Most people fart between 300 ml and 2 liters of gas a day, the average being half a liter. Human and animal methane does present a definite threat.
